 Day 5 - Canazei (I) to Canazei (I)

Rest Day / Mountain Hiking / Passo Pordoi

After a long sleep we finally got up and gave Konrad and his gear a lift to the cable car station on the Passo Pordoi. From there Leon and I continued up the road to Arabba where we had coffee, brunch and nice ice-cream whilst taking-in the views. The road to Arabba was stunning but very busy with processions of motorbikes and supercars. Riding back afforded a new set of views and we soaked it all up.

Where Konrad was heading looked spectacular, I look forward to his update. I seem to have picked up a cold so I'm not feeling the best but despite the cool night it's been 27C here today back in Canazei.

Leon and I explored Canazei, had a beer and did some shopping including testing the bottom wine bracket offerings. According to Leon's restaurateur friend, 2023 was a good year for the box wine. It was actually pretty good!

Update from Konrad: -

"After getting the cable car up to Sass Pordoi, I got lots of photos of the incredible views on offer around the mountain, before making a start towards Piz Boe and Rifugio Guido Bernard, the second highest in the Dolomites. I put my crampons on and while they weren't very good, they at least held in the snow which currently is more like slush. Air is thin at 3000m but the hike to the hut took a couple of hours, with the help of some rock sections and cables. Views are stunning - it's a giant field of snow and huge cliffs and mountains that feel like they're in a different world. The hut sits literally on top of Piz Boe, and there are 360 degrees views of the Sella range, Marmolada and lots of other mountains- they helicopter everything in and hike the rest of the supplies in once a week. Incredible - makes me appreciate the beer, wine and excellent pasta even more! There's a nice crowd of Belgians, Italians, Irish, Canadians and a New Zealander, so we're a diverse bunch up here and the hut is quite quiet. The clouds are closing in and I have a room to myself with a warm duvet, and tomorrow should be another stunning day to hike down and then go cable car to cable car before joining Dad and Leon."

"Sunset was stunning. After being closed in with clouds they began to lift and we all got pictures - the twilight up here really makes it look like it's out of a fairytale. With any luck the hike down should be also sunny but likely to be much colder!"

Tomorrow we have a late start and do the Marmolada loop once Konrad rejoins us. Should be another easy day and we look forward to it."
