Black Forest and some of the Romantic Route

We started relatively early, after a fresh croissant breakfast and crossed over the Rhine into Baden-Baden, after getting through a police check-point, where we filled-up the bikes and oiled our chains before setting out into the Black Forest and the famous B500 Road. It was a very scenic route with some great elevation and views but it got down to 12C which was a bit cold in my jacket without a liner or fleece on.

Whilst the road was perfect, the speed limit for much of it was between 30 and 45mph and there was a lot of traffic so it was a bit of a disappointment and probably more suited to motorhomes than motorbikes. We will ride through the Black Forest again on our return but hopefully on more enjoyable roads.

We continued through rural Germany and Baden-Wurtenburg into Bavaria. Some super riding but a ridiculous amount of speed cameras everywhere. Nice villages and views everywhere. We stopped in one of them for a traditional German kebab and chips. It was perfect and gave us the energy we needed to carry on.

Konrad really did plot a great route and there were bikes (motor and pedal) everywhere. I started feeling sleepy so we got fuel and went to McDonalds for iced coffee's to cool us down and wake us up. We also caught-up on the football where Poland almost managed a draw with the Netherlands despite Lewandowski not playing. Not travelling on motorways is great but it means 300 miles in a day is a bit of a marathon.

The last section presented the Austrian alps to us - impressive site that also included to beautiful mountain castles, one of which I believe is the original Disneyland castle. We camped by a lake in the foothills of the castle by a lake where Leon went for a swim in the meltwater lake. There are a lot of castles here as we are on the Romantic/Castle route - lovely to see.

The campsite has great facilities, but at £25 each it should do! We drank the beer and wine that we picked-up at a petrol station and enjoyed an interesting fusion of beef rice, chicken curry, smash and sausage and beans. As always, food tastes better when you are hungry.

We ended the night watching the England vs Serbia match on a big screen which was nice, but a bit of a late night considering the need for an early start tomorrow and some challenging riding that will take us through some really big passes in Austria and on into Italy. Apparently one of the roads is currently shut due to a rock-slide but it should open tomorrow morning. Let's see.....
